Overview

This Bachelor of Law and Society is designed to give the intellectual tools to understand, conduct research into and evaluate the relationship between law and society. The degree develops an understanding of how the law operates as a social institution, including its institutional structure, the role of key legal personnel, and the process of law reform. The degree demonstrates how the law is shaped by and shapes social context, including how law is constituted by (and constitutes) relations of power and normative understandings.

On completion of this degree students will have acquired high levels of knowledge and skills relevant to and applicable in many occupations including cognitive skills to evaluate law as a social institution. Students will have the ability to describe the importance of social context and social relations in shaping social institutions.

This degree prepares graduates for a career in a range of public and private sector organisations. Potential occupations may include dispute resolution officer, project and court officer and probation and parole officer; potential employers may include Department of Home Affairs, AFP and other government departments.

Combining degrees enables students to follow their interests and aspirations and enhance their career prospects by undertaking a second area of study in addition to their primary degree. Completing an approved combined degree option will normally add at least one extra year (full-time equivalent) to their studies. For example, students combining two three-year full-time equivalent degrees are normally able to complete both degrees in four years of full-time equivalent study.
