Overview

Our four-year Laboratory Medicine course is an exciting specialisation that builds on the Bachelor of Medical Science degree and covers areas such as haematology and transfusion science, microbiology, genetics, immunology, virology, biochemistry, molecular biology and more. Students undertake two 13-week placements, equating to approximately 900 hours of laboratory placement in the fourth year of the degree, allowing them to apply their learning in a full-time capacity to a diagnostic pathology laboratory environment. The course meets requirements as specified in the SA Health Allied Health Professional Credentials, including Access Appointments Policy Directive, for the SA Pathology credentialing process.

This degree has been designed to produce graduates who as medical scientists are knowledgeable specialists in a major area of science and possess well-developed practical laboratory skills and abilities to liaise with other groups of scientists and professional bodies.

Applicants should note that Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) is not included as an eligible course under the Reserved Sub-quota for the Doctor of Medicine at Flinders University. Graduates of the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) will only be considered under the Flinders Graduate Sub-quota.

Rural applicants should consider applying for the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) (Regional External Program) (SATAC code 244583) which includes regional placements available in Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Wallaroo, Gawler, Berri, Murray Bridge, Victor Harbor and Mount Gambier.
