Overview

This double degree prepares students with the skills necessary to provide vital optometry services to the community. It provides students with study in the fundamental sciences and fields of medical science that underpin optometry, followed by studies in visual sciences and optometry. This includes studies in the fundamentals of the eye and vision and practical training in optometric practice. It provides students with the knowledge and clinical skills to identify and treat eye dysfunction and diseases and to perform common diagnostic and therapeutic optometric procedures. The degree shares significant amounts of teaching with Medicine and includes a topic delivered by Ophthalmology at Flinders Medical Centre. Optometry and Ophthalmology at Flinders University are internationally recognised for their research and the degree includes an important research component.

Applicants who have applied on time but shuffle this preference after the 1 Dec 2022 will not be guaranteed equal consideration. Applicants who have applied on time will be required to have all pending or missing grades and/or adjustment factors finalised no later than 31 December 2022 to be guaranteed equal consideration.

Applicants are advised that should they receive an offer for a place in this degree they will be required to enrol in topics in the degree by the enrolment deadline stated in the letter of offer from SATAC. If they do not enrol via the Flinders University Student System by the specified date and maintain enrolment, their offer of a place in the degree will be forfeit. Applicants who receive an offer for a place in this degree should also note that if they subsequently receive an offer to a higher preference, their offer of a place in this degree will be deemed superseded and will also be forfeit.

This degree is accredited by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand. Graduates will be eligible to register as optometrists.
