Overview

Dietitians specialise in translation of food and nutrition science into practical advice for populations across the lifespan, on an individual and group level. This course will include the study of the nutritional and physical properties of food, and its role in the body in health and disease. Health promotion, behaviour change, and communication skills will be developed, along with skills in nutrition assessment of individuals and groups, diagnosis of nutritional problems, intervention and treatment planning, menu modifications and monitoring outcomes.

The course culminates in Professional Practice Placements that require the demonstration of skills and knowledge to meet the National Competency Standards for Dietitians. Placements will take place at a variety of locations within Victoria.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in two of Biology, Chemistry, Health And Human Development, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics.

Majors

Dietetics.

Potential Career Outcomes

A graduate of an accredited program is eligible to become a member of Dietitians Australia (DA) with dietetics qualifications, and to join the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) Program. They will be able to practice as Dietitians in a variety of settings including private and public health care, food service, health promotion, media, teaching and research positions.
