University of Canberra - Canberra
The Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) is a flexible, cross-disciplinary and innovative degree, allowing students to design a tailored study program with a specialisation in biomedical science and a breadth component to meet individual study needs and enhance employment opportunities.
Building on the strong foundational core major in science, students will develop critical thinking, scientific reasoning, data analysis and communication skills in the specialist scientific discipline of biomedical science. The specialist major in biomedical science will provide students with knowledge of the structure and function of the human body and how humans interact with, and respond to, their environment. This major delivers an integrated curriculum, progressing from the isolated genetic, cellular and molecular principles underlying human function, to understanding the major body systems and the regulation of these in maintaining human health.
Students can tailor the specialist major based on their interest through the selection of an advanced unit in biochemistry, physiology, infectious disease or genetics and genomics. The inclusion of a breadth component offers students the latitude to explore and expand their learning across a range of disciplines. Scenario-based study and work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities ensure students graduate career-ready, equipped to solve a range of theoretical and contemporary real-world problems in local and global contexts. A strong emphasis on experiential learning runs throughout the major. Active and participatory learning is encouraged through WIL opportunities and hands-on exposure to emerging technologies in the lab.
Anatomy and physiology, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics and genomics, mechanisms of disease and epidemiology.
Allied health technician, biomedical scientist, clinical laboratory technician, health technology assessor, pathology scientific officer, research scientist, research officer, scientific evaluator, science policy officer.
