Overview

Be prepared to work as a professional in one of the most exciting areas of modern science by combining theory and specialised practical training in the life sciences with the study of related business, legal, ethical and social issues. The degree is underpinned by knowledge in entrepreneurial and corporate biotechnology.

The Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) aims to develop graduates with an awareness of professional practice within the interdisciplinary, global biotechnology industry. The degree is designed to develop students' abilities to contribute to the development of scientifically sound, ethical and culturally sensitive solutions to complex problems for the economic and social benefit of society.

On completion of the degree students will be able to transfer and apply core scientific concepts to propose solutions in the biotechnology industry and use critical analysis and problem solving skills to propose innovative solutions within a diverse range of biotechnology industry sectors. Students will be able to synthesise information and communicate effectively, succinctly and sensitively with the scientific community, co-workers, government agencies, investors, the broad public and particular cultural and Indigenous communities and incorporate understanding and awareness of Indigenous and other communities' religious beliefs and culture into biotechnology practice.

This degree prepares graduates for employment in various workplaces including private and public global organisations. Potential occupations may include biotechnologist, quality assurance and researcher; potential employers may include universities, bionomics and other research centres.

On completion of this degree there is an opportunity to apply for a one-year Honours degree. For further information visit www.flinders.edu.au/honours.
