Overview

Music in the middle years provides a much-needed environment of acceptance, creativity and self-expression. Music specialist teachers encourage, test and inspire emerging musicians. Our Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) with Bachelor of Music sets you up for a rewarding career focused around your passion. Develop your digital capabilities in our eLearning Program - the first and only one of its kind for Education students in Australia. All Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) students participate in the School of Education's eLearning Program that requires students to own an iPad with pencil and keyboard. The University of Adelaide will assist you with buying one via a subsidy. We will show you how to use your own iPad with pencil and keyboard to its full teaching potential so you can earn Apple Teacher status. You might even do your first year placement in an Apple Distinguished School.

You will:

  • build expertise in both music and an additional non-music teaching area^
  • explore educational issues, curriculum and practice relevant to the middle years
  • work with inspiring teachers and researchers
  • gain professional experience and connections through extensive school placements.

You'll graduate with the skills and knowledge to respond to the intellectual, social and emotional needs of students in the middle years. You will be fully qualified to register as a teacher Australia-wide. If you'd like to teach overseas, your degree will be valid in most other countries. An education background will also prove invaluable in a wide range of careers servicing communities outside of the classroom.

^ Teaching areas include: classroom music, instrumental music, economics, English, geography, history, languages (must be taken at advanced level), linguistics (EAL/D), mathematical sciences, media.

The Bachelor of Teaching is for students who have not previously undertaken university study. If you have already commenced a degree, you should consider completing that degree and then apply for the Master of Teaching (Middle and Secondary).

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE): Prior to commencing fourth year of the degree, students must successfully complete both the literacy and numeracy components of the LANTITE. The LANTITE is administered through ACER.

This double degree program provides a professional qualification that is recognised for teacher registration purposes in South Australia. In most cases the qualification is portable to other states and overseas countries.

Please note: Mid-year entry will only be available to domestic students. Due to the program structure and professional experience placements, students commencing mid-year study will complete their program in 4.5 years instead of 4 years.
