Overview

Spark curiosity through Arts. The middle years of schooling (years 7-10) are an exciting time. Students are working out who they are, what's important to them and where the answers to these questions could take them. Develop your digital capabilities in our eLearning Program - the first and only one of its kind for Education students in Australia. All Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) students participate in the School of Education's eLearning Program, that requires students to own an iPad with pencil and keyboard. The University of Adelaide will assist you with buying one via a subsidy. We will show you how to use your own iPad with pencil and keyboard to its full teaching potential so you can earn Apple Teacher status. You might even do your first year placement in an Apple Distinguished School.

Our Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Arts (Music Teaching) gives you the skills to engage growing young people in the vital study of history, society, culture and creativity.

The Arts covers a broad range of learning areas, including languages, history, geography, legal studies, psychology, and English. Over the course of the degree you will:

  • build expertise in the two subjects you intend to teach^
  • explore educational issues, curriculum and practice relevant to the middle years
  • work with inspiring teachers and researchers
  • gain professional experience and connections through extensive school placements.
You'll graduate with the skills and knowledge to respond to the intellectual, social and emotional needs of students in the middle years. You will be fully qualified to register as a teacher Australia-wide. If you'd like to teach overseas, your degree will be valid in most other countries. An education background will also prove invaluable in a wide range of careers servicing communities outside of the classroom.

^Teaching areas include: business studies, economics, English, geography, history, languages, legal studies (minor only, restricted to Bachelor of Teaching students only), linguistics (EAL), mathematical sciences, media, music, psychology.

The Bachelor of Teaching is for students who have not previously undertaken university study. If you have already commenced a degree, you should consider completing that degree and then apply for the Master of Teaching (Middle and Secondary).

Students completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Teaching are eligible to gain credit towards the Master of Teaching (Middle and Secondary).

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE): Prior to commencing fourth year of the degree, students must successfully complete both the literacy and numeracy components of the LANTITE. The LANTITE is administered through ACER. The University of Adelaide will reimburse you when you successfully complete the Literacy component of the test at your first attempt.

This double degree program provides a professional qualification that is recognised for teacher registration purposes in South Australia. In most cases the qualification is portable to other states and overseas countries.
