Griffith University - Online
Sustainability is increasingly on the agenda for companies and governments as they strive to reduce their impact on the environment and remain competitive. This graduate certificate will expand your capability in this area and take you into the engineering side of the circular economy. You’ll learn about cleaner production, environmental management systems, and waste management. These topics are key to the economic transition that’s already underway.
Cleaner production can improve productivity, competitiveness and profit while also reducing and/or eliminating an organisation’s impact on the environment. Technology has come far enough that it has allowed this win-win situation to move from dream to reality. You’ll graduate with a deep understanding of the tools required to identify cleaner opportunities, policies and strategies and how to plan, assess, study and implement and continue a cleaner production program.
Waste management, treatment and disposal is also a core part of this course. You’ll gain knowledge on solid waste and hazardous waste characteristics focusing on collection, transfer, transport, separation, processing, recycling, composting, incineration and sanitary landfilling. Challenges in these areas are shared by countries across the world.
Finally, you’ll understand how the use of environmental management systems can move an organisation’s environmental performance beyond simply compliance. Tools including the ISO14000 series are crucial for systematically reducing environmental impact, and they also foster accountability and good governance within organisations. You’ll learn how they work and how to implement and assess them within an organisation.
