Overview

This course prepares students to become skilled primary teachers, who are able to meet the demands of twenty-first century learning. Students gain a qualification in primary education specialising in health and physical education.

The course focuses on contemporary approaches to teaching and learning. Subjects promote literacy and numeracy, health, physical education and sport, an appreciation of diversity, inquiry and problem-based practices, an understanding of 21st century schools, evidence-based decision making and reflective practice.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Early childhood education, Education studies, Language and literacy, Mathematics and numeracy, Physical education and health, Professional practice, Reflective practice, Science education, Teaching (Primary).

Potential Career Outcomes

This qualification leads to a career as a primary teacher. Graduates can also work as mainstream and/or specialise in health and physical education teachers in primary schools.  

Aside from traditional educational settings, Bachelor of Education graduates have the skills, knowledge and experience to work in private enterprise, government agencies and community service organisations. Graduates work in the state, independent and Catholic education sectors in both metropolitan and rural schools.
