Overview

Want to be an international innovator? Japan's technology, art, and pop culture are reshaping our lives. The country boasts the third-largest economy globally and is Australia's second-biggest trading partner. Japanese, spoken by 130 million people in Japan alone, is the ninth most common language in the world.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Languages (Japanese Studies) is interactive and immersive. You will:

  • learn to speak, read and write Japanese
  • develop an understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture
  • improve your knowledge of how language works
  • study Japanese influence in modern society
  • attend an intensive Japanese in-country summer school in Kyoto
The University of Adelaide has student exchange links with several Japanese universities including Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Sophia, Chuo and others. You can study overseas for one or two semesters, with credit toward your degree.

Where could it take you?

You could be a creative director, a diplomat, or a journalist in Tokyo. You might work in international business, helping companies with communication and cultural understanding. Perhaps you're interested in research, teaching, tourism, or translation.
