Overview

This course provides students with a professional and practical education in legal studies, focusing on the social, political and operational contexts of law and dispute resolution within Australia and globally.

Developed in consultation with industry, this course prepares students for employment in diverse areas such as courts and tribunals, mediation and arbitration, law offices, local and state government departments, ombudsman’s offices, businesses, community legal services, and human rights organisations.

Students can specialise in areas such as family law, Indigenous studies, environmental law, youth justice, criminal law, drug law reform, business law, dispute resolution or international human rights.

In their final year, students undertake supervised placements in relevant agencies and are supported in developing successful career pathways.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL or at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

This qualification can lead to careers including paralegal, youth justice officer, victim support officer, judge's associate, court registrar, conciliator, contracts officer, Fair Work Australia officer, law reform advocate, legal policy or project officer, mediator, negotiator, social policy or project officer, Victorian Equal Opportunity Commission officer, Human Rights Commission officer, Ombudsman's officer and Gender and Sexuality Commission officer.
